There are certain important things every writer should look for when hiring an editor. Not all editors and editing companies are created equal, so to sort through the editorial slush pile, there are things you can look for that will ensure a professional and positive editing experience.
One of the things writers must decide before looking for a book or document editor is whether or not to pay by the hour or by the project. The dissertation is ready – all these months and years of hard work are almost over, but you feel you need someone just to check it over for that final piece of mind – then you need help from a professional editor who will proofread your document and eradicate all those minor mistakes that your eyes can’t pick up anymore.
Once you send in the document to a dissertation editor, then they will check all the basics for you – does it conform to the school’s guidelines; is it in the correct format, with properly cited references (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.); if there is a Table of Contents, do all the page numbers and titles match up, and are the titles listed correctly; check spelling and grammar (more…)

So now that you’ve gone through the final edit of your manuscript, before you submit your work, you have to take a look at the formatting and ask yourself, “How does it look?”
If you are submitting it to a publisher or agent, you really have to find out their requirements and follow them to a “T.” However, if who you are submitting your work to has no specific guidelines for submission, then you’ll just want to submit the clearest, cleanest copy you can. If you’ve just finished writing your novel and you’re ready to send it off to publishers, be sure to read these helpful tips first. Although various publishing houses have their own guidelines, there are standard guidelines you can follow to ensure that your manuscript is easily readable and professionally presented.
First, be sure the font is Times New Roman or Courier. These fonts ensure that each character is the same width; therefore the manuscript looks as if it has been typed on a typewriter. Use a 12 point size, even for chapter headings. (more…)
