Why use editorial styles as CMS, APA, MLA, Harvard, Turabian...?
Technical editing includes more than just spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax. It involves the editing of citations, references, and footnotes.
First Editing offers technical editing services that
cover varied editorial styles such as
Chicago Manual of Style (CMS),
American Psychological Association (APA), and
Modern Language Association (MLA),
Harvard, Turabian, etc.
While some basics are similar in each, there are also slight differences: for example, in APA style,
a parenthetical citation would look thusly: (Smith, 2009). In Harvard style the same citation would be: (Smith 2009).
These styles are used to create a clear and consistent presentation of the written material.
Chicago Manual of Style (CMS)
Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) editing is geared toward manuscripts that are of the basic fiction, nonfiction variety.
This includes novels, self-help, children's books, poetry, short stories, etc.
With CMS, there are specific treatments for punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, etc.
These are typically not research papers, but instead regular prose-your basic storytelling-type writing.
Tables, references, or footnotes can be included within the text; however, these manuscripts are generally
written for the general public and not the scientific community.
American Psychological Association (APA)
APA editing is geared toward more scientific manuscripts that are based on the social and behavioral sciences.
These are typically, but not exclusively, research papers. There is a specific treatment for formatting,
spacing, font, citations, and the four major sections of the paper-title page, abstract, main body, references.
Modern Language Association (MLA)
Modern Language Association (MLA) editing is geared toward manuscripts within the liberal arts and humanities scope of writing, especially those on language and literature. These also tend to be research papers.
This style features concise, parenthetical citations within the text that are linked to an alphabetized "Works Cited" page at the end.
