A short introduction

In this book, I hope to be able to illustrate to you why I believe

mentoring is so critical to success in everyone's life and the benefits of

embracing such a paradigm. I believe it's not just a method applicable

to the workplace, but it also has relevance in the home, school, place

of worship, community and general society. Indeed, it's a model

for successful living. Any entity which adopts and internalizes the

philosophy of mentoring as its modus operandi has lodged itself into

a game changer. It is like wiring the DNA for excellence into the

very fabric of an organization, thereby securing and perpetuating a

culture of success.

I honestly believe the best investment is in people, for when

you invest in material things you are only purchasing time, but in

empowering others you are investing not only in time but for all

eternity. Let's loan our shoulders, so others can climb higher than we

have ever been. In 1159, John of Salisbury wrote in The Metalogicon:

“Bernard of Chartres used to compare us to dwarfs perched on the

shoulders of giants. He said that we see more and farther than our

predecessors, not because we have keener vision or greater height,

but because we are lifted and borne aloft on their gigantic stature.”

Finally, the life that counts isn't measured so much by what

it has accumulated for itself, but rather in how much it invests in

others. For in this way, you are both leaving a legacy while shaping

or predicting the future.
